New Police Device to nab drivers under the influence of marijuana or drugs in California
Drager 5000: New Police Device to Check the Sings of Drug Intoxication San Diego law enforcement officers started using new devices to check if motorists are driving under the influence of drugs. The new machine is called Drager Drug Test 5000. It checks saliva for seven different narcotic substances including marijuana, cocaine, opiates, methamphetamine, amphetamine, methadone, and benzodiazepines. The DUI-suspected driver will be asked by police to provide a small sample of saliva from inside his or her mouth. The saliva is collected on the sampler by moving it between the cheek and gum for a few minutes. The saliva sample is then placed into the Drager machine which prints out the results of the test. Orange County Former City Manager Is Facing Hit-And-Run DUI Charges
Joseph Burt Felz, a former city manager of Fullerton, California, could be jailed for up to one year in the county jail for allegedly committing two misdemeanor offenses. The allegations are that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and committed a hit-and-run causing property damage. The accident happened in one of the neighborhoods of Fullerton city in November 2016, when a car jumped off the road, over a curb, hit a tree, and got stuck in rain gutters near a lawn. Tarzana Suspected DUI Collision with Three Victims
March 6, 2017, Tarzana, a small city in Los Angeles, was stunned by the aftermath of DUI crash. An allegedly drunk driver was driving over the speed limit colliding into another vehicle, injuring three people. The suspected DUI driver who drove Honda Civic was traveling at 50 mph in a 25 mph zone. The driver lost control of the car, spun out and crashed into Honda CR-V, parked at the curb. New Senate Bill 698 could make illegal to drive with BAC between 0.04% and 0.07%
On February 17, 2017, a new bill was introduced to the California Legislature as an addition to the existing Vehicle Code (Sections 23152.1 and 23573.1). If passed, the bill will make it illegal to drive an automobile with the content of alcohol in blood between 0.04% and 0.07% when at the same time the driver is under the influence of any controlled substance, including at least 5 nanograms of THC per millimeter of blood. Currently only driving while under influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal when the person is impaired and can not operate a vehicle like a sober person would. Substance Abuse Counselor Found Guilty of a Fatal DUI Crash in California
On February 23, a former substance-abuse counselor was sentenced to 25 to life years of imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder. She was accused of a DUI leading to a serious injury, a DUI with .08 percent of alcohol in blood, a hit and run, and a second-degree murder.
