Distracted Driving Increased Traffic Death Rates in California.
Careless driving causes thousands of fatalities and the number of vehicle accidents is growing every year. 2016 was the deadliest year, according to the report introduced by the National Safety Council. In 2016 the number of road fatalities increased by 14% as compared with 2015 in California. Around 40000 people died because of traffic accidents during the past year in the USA with almost 10% of these fatalities happening in California. Substance Abuse Counselor Found Guilty of a Fatal DUI Crash in California
On February 23, a former substance-abuse counselor was sentenced to 25 to life years of imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder. She was accused of a DUI leading to a serious injury, a DUI with .08 percent of alcohol in blood, a hit and run, and a second-degree murder. Sherri Lynn Wilkins, a counselor in problems of drinking and drug abuse, was driving drunk when she struck a man, crossing the street in the city of Torrance on November 24, 2012. Recently, a drunk driver was arrested and can be charged with murder and a hit-run causing death. Man may be sentenced up to 26 years in prison for killing an Uber driver and fleeing the scene of the accident. The collision occurred in January 2017. Drunk driving got a famous Mexican-American boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya into trouble. The 43-year-old former boxer was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. California Highway Patrol stopped Mr. De La Hoya, nicknamed “the Golden Boy” by the press, around 2 a.m. for speeding while he was driving along Del Mar Blvd. in Pasadena, California. When the California Highway Patrol officer approached his car, an officer smelled alcohol vapors and observed other symptoms of intoxication. Drunk Driver sentenced to 60 years to life in prison for second-degree murder
In California, 2,500 people are killed each year by drunk drivers. This number is approximately 25,000 in the entire United States. Rien Ban, a 45-year-old resident of Fresno California, got sentenced last Thursday to 60 years to life in prison for a drunk-driving accident in 2014. The crash took place between the city of Kerman and the city of Mendota, on Highway 180 near Fresno, California in June 2014. At the time of the accident, Ban Rien was trying to overrun a slow-moving vehicle while driving east in his Mercedes SUV.
