Drunk Driving Crash on Coronado bridge, California

An annual motorcycle event “La Raza Run” turned into a collective prayer. Instead of celebrating, people remembered in prayers the victims of a horrible crash at Chicano Park on October 16. An accident took place around 3:30 pm.  A pickup truck hit the bridge rail and fell off the San Diego Bridge landing on a crowded motorcycle fiesta in a park below. CHP officers reported that four people died and nine were injured including the pick-up truck driver. Two people sustained serious injuries and a few other persons suffered minor to moderate injuries. $250,000 grant funds fight against DUI

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) provides grants that are used to finance some local and state public agencies every year. The main aim of the OTS programs is to reduce the fatality and injury accident rate on the roadways and to reduce the economic losses caused by drunk driving in California. This aim is accomplished through additional law enforcement and through raising public awareness of the dangers of DUI-related offenses. On October 5, 2016, the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department in conjunction with OTS embarked upon a year-long “Driving Clearly” campaign, aimed to prevent DUI-related injuries and fatalities in the city. All Uber and Lyft drivers will be checked for DUI arrests and criminal history

Earlier this week Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law, requiring check of criminal history for drivers of ride-sharing companies in California. Assembly members Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove) and Katcho Achadjian (R-San Luis Obispo) authored AB 1289 introducing amendments to the existing Passenger Charter-Party Carriers Act. Starting on January1, 2017, Transportation Network Companies (TNC) must carry out a comprehensive criminal background check for their current or potential employees. Over the past 30 years, drunk driving caused more than 1 million injuries and 50 thousand fatal incidents, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving data. For California this problem is very urgent, because the number of DUI crashes in California may increase. An effective way to fight driving under the influence is ignition interlock device. Interlock Ignition Device (IID) is currently mandated in 4 California counties after a DUI conviction. The legislature believes that the IID usage is necessary to use in all California counties. Los Angeles Rams safety TJ McDonald faces DUI charges

T.J. McDonald, an American football safety for the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League, was charged with a non-alcohol-related DUI in September. Last Friday, just after the Rams finished their training session, LA Prosecutor’s Office officially announced that they are filing charges against McDonald. The decision is tied to his arrest earlier this year in May when the car he was driving collided with a parked vehicle in the 22900 block of Gershwin Drive, Woodland Hills area, Los Angeles.
